Podium Finishes Highlight a Weekend of Struggles
Summit Point, WV – Hoping to follow up on a very successful weekend at HyperFest in 2011, the Velocity BHP / Myers Motorsports crew would again welcome driver Angelo Dinkov back to the fold, this time in the #787 Honda Civic. The team would also be providing support to Myers Motorsports driver Xavier Calderon in his #9 Honda CRX Si. Transmission issues and a leaking oil pan gasket on 787 would cost the team 2 of the 4 on-track sessions on the Friday Test Day, and with the Dyno company that was providing support to NASA for the weekend MIA, the team was left with a lot of uncertainties for 787 going into the weekend. Xavier made the most of his track time in all 4 sessions, running up front in each, leaving him very confident heading into the next day.
Saturday would prove to be a struggle as well for 787, though the team kept digging, battling through the issues of an unhappy engine, trying multiple ECU’s and tunes, but qualifying up front was not to be, and Angelo would be mired deep in the pack for the start of Saturday’s feature race. Xavier was able to work through the crowded field to manage a few clean laps, timing in 2nd in class on the starting grid. Dinkov went to work at the drop of the green flag, picking off cars in every corner as the short 25-minute race did not offer any time breathe. When the checker flag flew, Angelo had worked his way up to 3rd, earning a surprising podium finish in a less than optimal car, showing just how much of a wheel man he actually is. Xavier was able to overcome getting boxed in at the start, keeping the leader in site the entire race, and in the end he would finish one step down from the top of the podium, a well earned P2 finish.
With Sunday’s race scheduled for a 40-minute timed event, and the team still chasing their tails trying to get the motor up to par on 787, Angelo decided to sit the day out and not risk hurting the engine. This left the team to focus on Calderon, and Sunday morning’s qualifying session would prove to be a good one with X putting his CRX on pole for the late morning feature race. Determined to make up for his less-than-perfect start the day before, Calderon was on the gas when the green flag flew, pulling away from the rest of his in-class competitors. X ran a very smooth, consistant race, holding off a hard-charging David Martin at the checker flag to take the win.
